The morning of the sale Marc was fishing for inside information from Brendan Walsh on a horse he trained named Bail Us Out. Brendan let Marc know that he liked him, but he knew the owner was looking to “cash in” because he had just run a strong race at Keeneland and expected him to sell well past $100,000 (he sold for $190,000) which was out of our price range. Then Brendan told Marc there was another horse in the sale that he trained for Godolphin, named Snowdrift. Brendan didn’t think the horse would get a lot of attention form Buyers, but he’d just hate to see him go to another barn because he had so much potential. Armed with that information, Marc walked over to Barn 21 to see Snowdrift. Brendan told Marc he was still so high on Snowdrift because he is such an athletic individual. Marc wholeheartedly agreed. Physically, he is extremely difficult to fault. He is correct through his knees and ankles and tracks well. He has great balance and an almost perfect frame for a racehorse. In addition, we like his big deep girth and powerful hind end. Godolphin bred Snowdrift, and they rarely sell any of their yearlings, but had they offered him as a yearling, with his breeding and physique, it’s easy to see him bringing anywhere from $500,000 to $750,000 as a yearling.

This deal also makes sense to us as Godolphin’s (leading owner in the world) definition of success is going to be very different than Pocket Aces Racing’s. Godolphin is looking for Graded stakes winners that will compete at the very highest levels globally. Anything less, and they’re not interested. However, when Pocket Aces Racing buys a horse for $50,000, and sends it to Brendan, we would have hopes of the horse breaking its maiden in Kentucky (or FG/GP), running through its conditions and hopefully picking up a win at Kentucky Downs. According to Brendan, if this horse progresses the way he thinks he will, those goals are well within his ability.

As stated, the key to Snowdrift is that Brendan, the person who knows more about him than anyone else in the world, and a leading trainer in North America, believes there is much more to this horse than he has shown to date. He firmly believes that the world hasn’t seen the best of Snowdrift and with more experience, time and probably distance, he will continue to improve.

Snowdrift has run four times posting a record of 0-0-2. His first race was a sprint on the dirt at Ellis Park just to get him started. He ran very much like a turf horse on the dirt in that race. He then stretched out on the turf at Horseshoe Indianapolis for his next three starts. In two of those races, he reminded us a great deal of Kitodan as he dropped well off the pace to make a huge run through the lane.  He came up just short in those two races but galloped out past the winners in each.  His last start was his best finish yet, earning him a 76 EQB speed figure and a 62 Beyer figure.  The one start in those three that wasn’t great, came on very short rest, so we feel like he has a legit reason for the result.

We spoke with Brendan as soon as we signed the ticket, and he was very pleased to have the horse back under his care.
