Copperplate ran 3rd, beaten less than a length for everything and a nose for the place, in the 11th running of the Karl Boyes Memorial Stakes at Presque Isle Downs earlier this evening.
He broke very sharply and was settling into stalking position but got pinched between horses and had to take back a bit further than Pablo wanted. He was 3 wide going into the turn and kicked further outside when asked for some run. He kicked out into the six path at the top of the stretch with a big move and actually stuck a nose in front. Morales said he thought he was going to win at that point, but he was passed to his outside just before the wire. It was a 3-way photo for the place with Copperplate settling for the show.
