Hip 2090 is an impressive colt by Charlatan out of On Reflection by Malibu Moon. Charlatan is a son of champion sprinter, Speightstown. Charlatan posted a record of 4-1-0 with earnings of $4,047,200 from five starts. He won at distances of 6 furlongs to 9 furlongs including a pair of Grade I stakes, the Arkansas Derby and the Runhappy Malibu Stakes. He ran second in the Grade I Saudi Cup.
On Reflection is by exceptional broodmare sire Malibu Moon. She has produced a pair of winners including Warrior in Chief who earned nearly $280,000 with a record of 6-5-4 from 37 starts. Her 2YO filly by Good Magic is training at The Thoroughbred Center, working regularly toward her debut. She was a $375,000 yearling purchase.
We were drawn to hips 2089 and 2090, both colts by Charlatan. We liked them both, but ultimately, we liked this one a bit more, so we focused on him. He was going through the ring midday, at the height of activity. Despite all the commotion, he never turned a hair. He kept his head down and went about his business, an indication of a good mind. We had a lengthy discussion as 2089 went the ring about how far we were willing to go to get him. We decided we’d stretch to $80,000. When the bidding stopped at $40,000, we were shocked AND elated.
The colt has good size and covers a great deal of ground with loads of strength in all the right places. He looks like a two-turn dirt type. We really love his frame. He’s got a great shoulder angle along with ideal hip and hind leg conformation. He’s correct through his knees and ankles and tracks well front to back. He’s a very agile mover and really reaches out with his hind end. He’s an impressive physical now, but we expect him to grow into a real stunner by this time next year.
We love to see stamina pedigrees with some speed influence and this colt has EXACTLY that…speed through his paternal grandsire in Speightstown and stamina through his maternal grandsire in Malibu Moon. It’s an exceptional combination.
The colt is eligible for the multi-horse discount. The more you buy, the more you save. The colt is nearly halfway sold out already.
