Hip 1604 is a gorgeous colt by Good Magic out of Lisa’s Booby Trap by Drewman. Good Magic is a son of Curlin. He posted a career race record of 3-3-1 with earnings of $2,945,000 from nine starts. He won the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile, the Bluegrass Stakes and the Haskell Invitational. He was second leading first, second and third crop sire in his first three years at stud. He is currently the 28th leading overall sire in North America. From only four crops of racing age, Good Magic is already the sire of Classic winners Mage (Kentucky Derby) and Dornoch (Belmont) as well as Muth, Blazing Sevens and Mixto to name a few.
When we look at foals of young stallions, we focus on qualities like class and speed at two and being able to carry that class and speed over a route of ground at three, who are by prolific sire lines themselves. Good Magic checks all of those boxes. He won the BC Juvenile and ran second in the Champagne at two. He went on to win the Bluegrass and Travers at three while running second in the Kentucky Derby. He is by Curlin, widely considered the greatest sire of sires alive today.
Lisa’s Booby Trap is by Drewman (Unbridled). She hit the board in fifteen of eighteen starts with earnings of $182,444. She won the Loudonville Stake at Saratoga as a 3YO. She’s a graded stakes producer with Not That Brady, who was runner-up in the GIII Withers and winner of the Runyon Stake at Aqueduct.
The colt has a few minor notations on his vet report. They are issues that will be remedied with maturity and are not of concern for us. However, they could have been problematic for 2YO pinhookers. Had his vet report been completely clean, he would not have been anywhere near our budget.
He has good size with tons of quality. He is a scopey sort with a powerful hip and especially strong gaskins. He tracks well through all his limbs which should help with soundness. He’s an excellent mover for such a big, strong colt. He’s very agile through the forelimbs with a long, powerful stride. If he was a football player, he’d be a linebacker…the fastest “big guy” on the squad.
We asked former trainer, Buff Bradley to take a look at the colt as we were inspecting him. Buff currently works at Keeneland as part of the sales team. It just so happened that Buff had inspected this colt prior to the sale this summer. After agreeing with Marc that he was a very good looking colt, Buff pulled up his notes from the summer. They matched our opinion almost exactly…the colt has a great frame and is only going to get better as he matures.
