Our fifth purchase and first of the ninth session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale was Hip 2856, a colt by Tiz The Law out of Shiny Necklass by Quality Road. We purchased him early in the session for $75,000.
Tiz The Law is a very impressive young sire. He entered stud in 2021 but is already a fixture on the top sire list. He currently sits at #10 overall in North America and is the #2 Third-Crop sire sitting just behind Vekoma. He is the sire of eleven graded stakes winners including GI winners Fully Subscribed, Usha and Eunomia. He is also the sire of GII winning millionaires Tiztastic and Caroline St Beat. He earned $2,735,300 on his way to a record of 6-1-1 from nine starts while winning the GI Champagne, the GI Florida Derby, the GIII Holy Bull, GI Belmont Stakes and GI Travers. He is also the sire of our own Irish Law.
The colt is the second foal out of Shiny Necklass, an unraced daughter of Quality Road. Shiny Necklass is out of the same female family as Kingmambo, Miesque, Miesque’s Son and Mingun. Quality Road is moving up the broodmare sire rankings with 30 stakes winners for his daughters.
The colt has just enough size, given his May birthdate, and we expect he will grow to be a handy sized horse by next summer. Those sorts are much easier to keep sound. We believe this colt is an ideal physical specimen for high-class, two-turn, dirt racing. His neck and shoulder tie in beautifully and he has a very long, flat hip. In addition, he has an extremely powerful hind leg, with big fat gaskins, and enough bone to help him stay sound. His most impressive trait isn’t necessarily physical. This colt has an excellent “presence” and it really shows when he’s on the move. Physically, the walk is great in every way – huge stride, athletic through forelimbs, tracking well, etc. but he appears to swell up to twice his size at the walk. It’s hard to put your finger on it, but he seems to exude confidence. We take this an early indication that he’ll “want” to be a racehorse when he gets to the track.
