Pocket Aces Racing Adds Yearling Colt by Sky Mesa

Pocket Aces Racing LLC is happy to introduce our new colt by Sky Mesa out of Longshot Run, by Discreet Cat.  He was purchased at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale earlier this week for $42,000.  We didn’t set out to purchase an Indiana bred, but this one was too nice to pass by.

This is another one of our purchases that bloodstock agent Jun Park identified for us back at the barns the day before he went through the ring. Since Jun had already tabbed him as one of his top selections, we made sure to keep a close eye out for him in the back ring.  “When I had a chance to see him, I was not disappointed,” said Marc Wampler.  “The first thing I noticed about the colt was the way he tracked through his from limbs. His conformation through his knees and ankles was excellent. Then I pulled him out and looked at him from the side. Right away, I could tell he had the 3 basics I am looking for in any horse – the ideal amount of size, scope, and strength. I especially liked this colt’s frame and angles. He has great shoulder and hip angles and the shape of his hind legs through his gaskins and hocks was exactly what I like to see. Stood up, the colt is a very athletic specimen, but I really thought the best part of him was on the move. He has a very strong walk. Planting and driving through his hocks powerfully while reaching out for a ton of ground with every stride. It is very easy to imagine him galloping out on the track next year and impressing everyone that sees him.”

“I’m always particularly interested in how colts handle the crowds in the back ring as they can be easily distracted,” said Marc.  “Hip 3212 handled everything extremely well. From the time he entered the back ring until he reached the sales ring this colt had his head down and went about his business very calm and cool. This is a good indication that he’ll handle the mental aspects of training very well.”

Sky Mesa is a rock steady sire that just throws runners.  From fifteen crops of racing age, he has sired 688 winners including 75 stakes winners, 26 graded stakes winners and 5 champions.  His runners have earned nearly $65 million dollars in total and averaged nearly $70,000 in career earnings.  Notable progeny include millionaires General Quarters and Dynamic Sky as well as Thiskyhasnolimit, Perfect Alibi, Sky Diva, Ami’s Mesa and My Impression.

Longshot Run is a daughter of Discreet Cat.  She was a $100,000 purchase from the Keeneland mixed sale. She unfortunately suffered a career ending injury in just her second start.  The colt is her second foal.

As an Indiana-bred he is eligible for their very lucrative state program.  Maiden Special Weights at Indiana Grand run for $36,000 this year with allowance races up to $40,000.  There are multiple Indiana-bred stakes throughout the year with purses up to $150,000.  He will be eligible for a 40% purse bonus in most open races at Indiana Grand.

A full share in the colt represents 10% ownership and costs $6,800.  Expenses are $1,500 per quarter per FULL share beginning January 1, 2022, if necessary.  Partial shares are availablePlease contact Jared (606-922-9325) or Marc (859-312-6272) or email [email protected] to reserve your spot today.
